Interview questions. Scenario 9 of 11. Time out of work

The gap in your CV

You were out of work for fourteen months. Part of that time you were unwell, and part of it you were caring for a parent.

The interviewer looks at your CV and says: "I see there's a gap here. What were you doing during that time?"

Which answer works best?
Good call

You have answered honestly without sharing more than you want to. You do not owe medical or family details. Ending on being ready turns the answer towards the job, which is where they want to go too.

Could be better

It is honest, and it is your choice to share it. But you are not required to, and a long medical history can take over the interview. A brief answer protects your privacy and keeps the focus on your skills.

Not the best call

A made-up job invites follow-up questions you cannot answer, and a false statement can cost you the job later if it comes out. The true answer, given briefly, is safer and perfectly acceptable.

Could be better

You are within your rights, and some questions do deserve that reply. But with nothing else offered, the interviewer is left to guess. One calm sentence usually closes the subject faster than a refusal.

The principle

A gap needs one honest sentence, not a full account. Say briefly what it was for, that you are ready now, and move on. Your medical details are yours to keep.
