Lesson 3 of 10

Me, you and "is"

Say I, you, he and she, and make your first sentences.

About 5 minutes. 8 words and phrases.

Learn

Read each one out loud, following the pinyin. Say it a second time before you move on.

  1. 我

    wǒ

    I, me

  2. 你

    nǐ

    you

  3. 他

    tā

    he, him

  4. 她

    tā

    she, her

他 and 她 sound exactly the same. Only the written character shows the difference.

  5. 是

    shì

    to be (am, is, are)

Used to link two nouns, as in 我是老师 (I am a teacher). It does not change for I, you or they.

  6. 不

    bù

    not, no

Goes in front of the verb. 我不是 means "I am not".

  7. 很

    hěn

    very

  8. 好

    hǎo

    good, well

Lesson done

Take this with you

Mandarin verbs never change their form. 我是, 你是 and 她是 all use the same 是, and there is no past tense ending to learn. Word order does most of the work.
