Lesson 4 of 10

How are you?

Ask how someone is, answer, and ask back.

About 5 minutes. 6 words and phrases.

Learn

Read each one out loud, following the pinyin. Say it a second time before you move on.

  1. 你好吗?

    nǐ hǎo ma?

    How are you?

你好 (hello) plus 吗, which turns it into a question.

  2. 我很好

    wǒ hěn hǎo

    I'm well

很 is needed here even though it means "very". 我好 on its own sounds unfinished, so 我很好 is closer to a plain "I'm fine".

  3. 你呢?

    nǐ ne?

    And you?

  4. 也

    yě

    also, too

Goes before the verb or adjective. 我也很好 is "I'm well too".

  5. 忙

    máng

    busy

  6. 累

    lèi

    tired

Take this with you

吗 and 呢 are small words at the end of a sentence that change what it does. 吗 makes a yes or no question. 呢 bounces the question back: "and you?".
